Leftover from my Genesis roleplay blog, post here.
Genesis has a reputation for being a bully to the lower classes and there are many boogieman style stories that regularly circulate implying that he’ll set people on fire for the smallest infractions - or, at times, for no reason but his own whims.
This is partially justified, because Genesis is quick tempered and has an extremely low tolerance for idiocy, incompetence, and willful ignorance. The times he’s in charge of training, he’s been called out on being extremely hard on people physically and emotionally. If asked about it, he generally replies with flippant snark.
The truth of the matter is, however, that he’s extremely frustrated with how many more people were advanced to higher ranks just to fill slots for the war. His reasoning, though he rarely bothers to explain it, is that if they can’t handle him being hard on them, they aren’t going to survive the front lines. And is he hard on them? Oh yes. He is very hard on them, but he is blazing fire that, if you survive his tempering, will harden you into a weapon that will last.
Genesis Rhapsodos does not give a damn if you like him, but you will respect him. And if it takes people fearing him and thinking he’s a terrible person to save their lives, he’s willing to make that sacrifice. Let them go to Angeal for coddling and comfort; when they’re in the thick of battle, it’ll be the reflexes honed from dodging his “random” attacks and being hyper alert to the feel of magic being cast that gets them moving before they can be killed. It will be the ingrained response to push beyond what they think they could possibly do, for fear of pain - possibly death, because the enemy does not “fight fair” - that will keep them moving until they reach safety. It will be having learned to think clearly and act with confidence and without hesitation even when they’re terrified that will carry them through the war. Whether they realize it or not is unimportant; they will live, and that is all that matters.
Of course, despite how hard the Commander is on those under his command, goddess help the ones he catches bullying others. Well before he grew into his power, Genesis was “too small” and “too pretty” and he has never forgotten.
And no one harasses his men but him.
